About us

Here at Cuyuna Electric & Energy, not only are we electrician owned and operated, but we drive ethics before profits. We believe in giving our customers an end product that they can feel good about. There are many great electrical contractors out there and we are adding to that list with Cuyuna E&E. We want our customers, whether that be residential, commercial, or industrial, to have the best experience possible. Every project is unique in its own way, and we want to make sure our customers feel that their voice is heard, and that the outcome shows that they were listened to. Through transparency and integrity, we will make sure our customers’ needs and wants are met with rigorous authenticity and care.

Why did we choose the name Cuyuna Electric & Energy?

There is a town located about two hours north of the Twin Cities called Cuyuna, which was named after Colton’s great(3x) grandfather, Cuyler Adams. Where does the “una” part come from? Cuyler had a St. Bernard dog named Una. It only made sense for him to combine their names together. Cuyler was an ambitious spirit with a drive for doing what had to be done no matter what task he was working on. From fur trading and founding the Cuyuna Iron Range, he was an intelligent go getter that inspired us to do the same. What’s right for our customers.

Meet the owners

David Sauvageau (Master Electrician)

My electrical journey started in an OJT classroom.  The teacher had us pick some career paths and choose appropriate schools to apply to. I had an affinity for math and science, and also enjoyed working with my hands. He suggested electrician as a career path and that I should apply to Dunwoody Institute.  I applied, was accepted, and completed the electrical course with an associates degree in applied science.

I was hired by Lutsen mountain ski resort where the master and I wired up the moose mountain chalet, re-wired Rosie’s chalet, and anything else they needed. After that, during the 2007/08 recession I decided to take a job in a large scale distribution center for a large retail giant.  There I learned how to work with large scale logic controllers and automation. I also received my maintenance electrical license.  After several years I decided to go back “in the field” and started work with a small electrical shop. Here I worked along side the master/owner.  We were the house electricians for a corrugated board manufacturing facility along with other companies where we did everything from wiring up a new service’s, updated machine logic, moved machines, and even security systems. If it had a wire we dealt with it.  We also took on residential and commercial projects. Nothing was off the table.

I left that position and obtained my journeyman’s license. My next pursuit was in the renewable energy field (solar). This is also the point where I met my business partner Colton and quickly realized that not only did he have the same thirst for knowledge as me, but he also shared the same moral and ethical mindset. I led crews in the design and construction of residential solar systems along with the occasional small to medium size agricultural ones.

After That I decided to work for a different company that did much of the same work on a much larger scale.  I led crews on large commercial, industrial and agricultural sites. Some as large as one megawatt. At this point they asked If I was interested in the responsible master role.  I did turn them down realizing that Colton and I were becoming more aware of the systematic problems that the renewable industry was facing. Colton And I decided That we were going to try to address these problems and the only way to do so was by starting our own company.

What is the problems? As Colton And I saw it the industry was in large being led by people that understood the business side but failed to understand the electrical side. In an industry governed by the electrical field this can be problematic.  We also saw that the sale was the number one priority and the customer along with the product often fell by the wayside. Ask enough people who have received solar and you will soon h the horror stories of projects left unfinished, systems greatly oversold on their performance, or just flat out ugly systems that were built with little or no workmanship.

Colton And I started this business to alleviate these problems and give customers more choice.  Yes, we want to sell you on our electrical services but only if it makes sense for your unique situation.  We don’t want to make a sale just to make a sale.  Ethics over Profits.  We offer A wide range of electrical services and hope you choose us when selecting a contractor.

Colton Koch (Journeyman Electrician)

Since I was young, I’ve had a strong knack for learning new things along with a great sense of sociability. From playing the drums, to ceramics, and learning about electricity, my newest endeavor is how to start a successful electrical contracting business with somebody who shares the same passion. Ethics have always been at the forefront of how I treat people and I strive to pass that same feeling along to our customers. In my book, there is no person or thing that is above or below me and I believe that every person has their own unique story to tell; and when that story is dealing with something that is part of an electrical process, we would love to make that a good chapter!

My history with how I got into the electrical industry started with my Grandfather whom I named Bepa at about the age of three. I was very passionate about going to school for either drumming or ceramics, but through conversations with Bepa, he planted the seed in my brain to learn about renewable energy instead. That thought slowly grew and then turned into reality. I enrolled at Century college to the Energy Technical Specialist program and graduated with honors along with a fancy piece of paper that will tell you just that. I’ve been working in the industry now for seven years and hope for many more! Though I still have a strong passion for the arts, I also love when I get to work with somebody to complete an electrical job that will bring them piece of mind and comfort that the job was done with integrity and care. I look forward to all the new faces I get to add to the upcoming chapters in my life.
